Over the last 20 years we have seen a dramatic growth in the afterschool movement. We have seen an increase in the number of afterschool initiatives and programs as well as increases in afterschool literature. But has the afterschool movement ground to a halt?
While the need for afterschool activities continue to grow, there are emerging budget threats to these programs due to increased labor costs and the withdrawal of important public and private funding. At the same time there are exciting program trends and innovations, and new opportunities ahead.
In order to meet the challenges and opportunities ahead, it is important for field leaders to reflect, to consolidate, and look to the future. This conference will focus on:
The HKL VII conference will be a “thinking” conference. It will offer afterschool stakeholders the opportunity to reflect on these issues and the related challenges and opportunities. This will be accomplished through brief plenary presentations, panels, and workshops by national experts and successful program leaders.
